2013 Year in Review

Philadelphia Emerging Museum Professionals began 2013 by asking you what you wanted from us at the January Jumpstart at Fleisher Art Memorial. Since that chilly evening, the board has been hard at work trying to meet as many of the goals set forth as possible. Most notably, Philly EMP was proud to introduce Hire Learning, a program set up to assist job searchers in the museum world with the tools necessary to find employment.

panelHire Learning began with a resume workshop and panel discussion in May at the Franklin Institute. Panelists representing the Franklin Institute, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Constitution Center, and Please Touch Museum took questions from EMPs before breaking into smaller groups to go over individual resumes. In addition to discussing the finer points of crafting a quality resume, panelists also offered valuable insight on cover letters, thank you notes, and other means of making an impression.

Over the summer, Philly EMP announced the second level of the Hire Learning initiative: Informational Interviews. EMPs were able to sign up to interview with a variety of vice presidents, directors, and managers throughout the Philadelphia region. Not only have interviewees found the process helpful, but several interviewers noted that they were able to gain something from the experience as well. A panel comprised of both interviewers and interviewees will discuss how the process worked for them in January.

In addition to Hire Learning, Philly EMP kept busy with our always-popular quarterly happy hours. Throughout 2013, Philly EMP hosted happy hours in Old City, South Philly, Chinatown, and the Parkway Museum District. For 2014, we would like to hear where you would like our next happy hour to be. We’ve narrowed down a list of neighborhoods in which we’ve held our most successful happy hours, and would like you to pick which one is next! At the end of this post, you will find a poll, please feel free to vote for your neighborhood of choice. In addition to voting for which neighborhood you would like to see us visit next, feel free to suggest your favorite watering hole in the comments!

In the autumn, Philly EMP branched out a bit. October kicked off with a picnic held at the Woodlands Cemetery and Mansion in West Philly. A few weeks later, we asked attendees at the Museum Council’s annual fall event who they would most like to share a cell with as they enjoyed an evening at Eastern State Penitentiary.

With 2014 on the horizon, the folks at Philly EMP look forward to more events like these. As mentioned above, the second Hire Learning panel discussion get things moving toward the end of January. Our next happy hour will follow that in mid-March, at which point we will announce May’s event. We hope to see you all throughout 2014!
