Founded: May 10, 1876

Mission: The Philadelphia Museum of Art, in partnership with the city, the region, and art museums around the globe, seeks to preserve, enhance, interpret, and extend the reach of its great collections in particular, and the visual arts in general, to an increasing and increasingly diverse audience as a source of delight, illumination and lifelong learning.

Known For: The iconic steps as seen in the Rocky films, a world-class collection

Memorable Moment: In 2005, PMA hosted the Dali exhibit and the Philadelphia portion of Live 8

Fun Fact: Then known as the Pennsylvania Museum of Art, PMA was founded as a part of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition and was headquartered at Memorial Hall, now the home of Please Touch Museum

Future Plans: A 78,000 square foot expansion designed by architect Frank Gehry
