Job Board Form Letter

In an effort to make the museum hiring process more equitable, we have adopted the following job posting requirements:

  • Paid positions only
  • Must include an accurate salary range
  • Must include the name and title of the person to whom candidates should address applications
  • Must include interview format (panel, one-on-one, group, etc.)
  • We strongly encourage you to accept relevant experience alongside any degree requirements
  • Must include breakdown of hiring process from application to training

This ensures that any open positions posted on our website are both transparent and open to more applicants. If you would like to see other job boards adopt this model, please feel free to use the form letter below.

To whom it may concern,

I am writing today in regard to your job posting board. Many of the jobs posted do not list a salary range, nor do they give much information about the hiring process. Because institutions have been slow to change their job posting format, I am asking your organization to adapt the following job posting requirements for your job board, along with the reasoning behind each one.

  1. Paid positions only
    • Unpaid internships are only available to those who can afford to work for free, and disqualify many people without the means from getting experience in our field.
  2. Must include an accurate salary range
    • The job hunt is time-consuming and expensive for both the employer and prospective employee. Posting an accurate salary range will help both sides avoid wasting time on jobs/candidates they cannot afford.
  3. Must include the name and title of the person to whom candidates should address applications
    • This avoids any confusion for candidates submitting applications, resumes, and cover letters.
  4. Must include interview format (group, panel, one-on-one, etc.)
    • This allows candidates to better prepare for an interview and reduce the stress of the unknown.
  5. We strongly encourage you to accept relevant experience alongside any degree requirements
    • Degree requirements exclude those who were unable to obtain a degree for financial reasons but instead worked in related fields. Job requirements should not have barriers to those who chose/needed to work instead of pursuing higher education.
  6. Must include a breakdown of the hiring process from application to training
    • This offers candidates a clear picture of what to expect and give them a better understanding of your timeline

It is my hope that as we strive to diversify the field and make museums and cultural institutions more equitable, that we start by leveling the playing field for those who want to work in the humanities. I look forward to seeing these requirements posted on your job board in the near future.
Sincerely,
